RiverKings Win Third Straight; Ground Ice Flyers 4-1

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - All-You-Can-Eat Night at Planters Bank Ice at Landers Center turned out to be a feast on the ice as well as in the stands as the RiverKings knock off the previously undefeated Pensacola Ice Flyers, 4-1. Captain Devin Mantha paved the way notching two goals and an assist while former Ice Flyer Dan Tedesco added three helpers and the RiverKings won their third straight.

The Riverkings rode the momentum of their two weekend wins and jumped out on top of the Ice Flyers in the first period. When Ice Flyer Matt Johnson got called for slashing, the RiverKings used the power play to their full advantage when a blast from the point by Vytal Cote beat Ice Flyers goalie Greg Dodds. Brant Sherwood and Matt Harrington were credited with assists on the play as the RiverKings moved the puck well in the offensive zone. The RiverKings took their 1-0 lead to the intermission and tacked on more the following period.

The second period belonged to the Captain, Devin Mantha, as he knocked in two goals in the frame. The first coming even strength when he slipped below the defense and rifled a sharp angle shot that beat Doods high to the blocker side. His first goal gave the RiverKings a 2-0 lead, and it wouldn’t be long, only two minutes and two seconds later before Mantha added his second total. On a clearing attempt, a puck hit an Ice Flyer high on the torso and dropped right next to Mantha giving chase. Without thinking, Matha turned around along the boards and whipped a shot on goal. It handcuffed Dodds and hit twine, and with 6:55 left in the second, the RiverKings held a comfortable 3-0 lead.

The Ice Flyers would get their only goal of the night in the third period, thanks to Trever Hertz. Pijus Rulevicius sat in the box with a slashing minor giving the Ice Flyers the advantage. Mississippi was 12 seconds away from surviving yet another Pensacola power play, but Hertz took a shot from the high slot that weaved through traffic and got behind goaltender Tyler Green cutting the RiverKings lead to 3-1.

The Riverkings returned the favor with a powerplay goal of their own only 2 minutes and 27 seconds later as the newest Mississippi RiverKings Don Olivieri scored on a point blast at the 15:08 mark of the period, increasing the RiverKings lead to 4-1. Perhaps the best chance of the night for the Ice Flyers to climb into the game came at the 11:15 mark of the third when Ryan Marcuz was caught hooking forward Garret Milan who was awarded a penalty shot. His backhand attempt sailed high over the cage, and the RiverKings would retain their 4-1 lead until the final tick of the clock.
When the dust settled on the evening, Devin Mantha would rack up two goals and an assist, Dan Tedesco received credit for three assists, and Vytal Cote notched a goal and an assist. Other helpers got awarded to Brantley Sherwood, Matt Harrington, and Ralfs Grinbergs. Ice Flyers point getters on the night were Trever Hertz with the goal, Robert Lepine and Jessyko Bernard with the assists.

With the win, the RiverKings move to 5-2-0 on the season while the Ice Flyers drop to 7-1-0. The RiverKings return to action on Friday night as they make their first trip of the season to Birmingham, Alabama, to take on the winless Bulls. The RiverKings and Bulls met in a matchup at Planters Bank Ice at Landers Center earlier this season with the RiverKings coming out on top 3-1.
