RiverKings Slammed By Mayhem, 6-1

MACON, Georgia - The RiverKings fell behind early in the first period and couldn’t recover, dropping their Friday night battle with the Mayhem., 6-1.
Much like their game this past Saturday against the Knoxville Ice Bears, the RiverKings fell into an early hole, giving up two goals in the first six minutes of the game. Unlike Saturday, the team wasn’t able to climb back into the game in the first. Already trailing 2-0, the RiverKings had the opportunity to bounce back with a power play opportunity. It was Macon, however, who jumped on the chance when John Siemer netted his second goal of the night, this time shorthanded, to give Macon the 3-0 lead.
Out of the gate in the second period, the RiverKings looked like they regained some momentum, but only 1:23 into the period the Mayhem, and Darren McCormick, made sure to keep pressing. Intercepting a pass in the high slot, McCormick rifled a wrist shot past Tyler Green, and suddenly it was 4-0 Macon, early in the second period.
Mississippi couldn’t solve Macon goalie Charlie Finn who turned away all the RiverKings shots in the first and second period. The Mayhem netted their fifth and sixth goals of the night later in the middle frame thanks to a Ryan Salkeld breakaway and Caleb Cameron backhand shot that beat Green five-hole.
Out of the second intermission, Head Coach Derek Landmesser opted to change goalies, giving Jared Rutledge the ice time. Rutledge would turn away all nine shots he saw in the third and gave the momentum the RiverKings needed to break the goose-egg on the scoreboard. Speeding up the right-wing board, Ryan Marcuz sent a wrist-shot squeaking through Finn and dribbling across the goal line for the RiverKings first and only goal of the night. Both defenses would stand firm at that point, and the RiverKings fell to the Mayhem, 6-1.
The two teams are back in action Saturday night in a rematch from Macon Coliseum. The combatants will face off a third time in five days on Tuesday when the RiverKings return home to Planter’s Bank Ice at Landers Center to play host for Face Off Field Trip.
