RiverKings Score Season High, Smash Mayhem 8-3

MACON, Georgia - Devin Mantha scores a pair and 14 different RiverKings register points in an 8-3 beatdown of the Macon Mayhem.

Reversing recent fortunes, the RiverKings got on the board first thanks to Bryan Arneson broke the scoreless tie. Ryan Marcuz started the play with a pass cross-ice which was touched up by Devin Mantha and left for Arneson who beat Macon goaltender Charlie Finn over the shoulder to take the lead. Keeping the petal down the RiverKings took a 2-0 lead with Ryan Marcuz's power-play goal. Macon made things interesting with a Daniel Gentzler goal to cut the Mississippi lead in half, 2-1, heading into the first intermission.

Out of the gate in the second period, Macon netted a shorthanded goal, the second in as many nights for the Mayhem, to tie things 2-2 only 52 seconds into the period. The RiverKings wasted no time getting their lead back when Matt Harrington buried a shot past Finn. Shane Bennett followed suit for the RiverKings netting his 13th goal of the season getting Mississippi back on top by two, 4-2.

It was Devin Mantha's shorthanded goal at the 8:47 mark of the second period that sent the RiverKings to a 5-2 lead and spelled the end of the night for Charlie Finn, with Troy Passingham stepping in for Macon. Passingham didn't fare much better as Taylor Pryce beat the netminder late in the second period taking the RiverKings up 6-3. Assisting on the gal was Cody Walsh and Jake Schultz, the latter getting his first point of the season and his first in the SPHL.

The third period started with more of the same, an onslaught from the RiverKings. Brantley Sherwood completed his "Gordie Howe Hat Trick" netting a goal at the 1:25 mark of the third period, adding to an earlier assist and fight. The RiverKings eighth and final goal came off the stick of Devin Mantha, his second of the night, and despite a Daniel Echeverri power-play goal with only 1:25 left to go in the game, the RiverKings rode to victory, 8-3.

The black and gold return home to Planters Bank Ice at Landers center this Tuesday, taking on the Mayhem for the third time in five days. It's Face Off Field Trip with a special 10:30 A.M. puck drop. For tickets visit riverkings.com/ticketmaster.
