RiverKings Bested by Bulls, 5-2

PELHAM, Ala. - Shane Bennett scored two goals eight seconds apart, but the RiverKings fall to the Bulls, 5-2, for Mississippi’s fourth straight loss.

Birmingham opened the scoring 6:21 into the first when their league-worst power play converted on their first chance thanks to Brandon Fehd. A blast from the point went wide right of Tyler Green’s net and banked off the end wall to a waiting Fehd. The backhand tap-in was just enough to get past the outstretched green and give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.

The Bulls would get on the board for the second time in the first period when just under 10 minutes later, the opportunistic Alexander Tauline jumped on a loose puck and pounded home a shot only inches away from the post.

The second period would start with a quick Bulls goal to extend the lead to 3-0 until the RiverKings clawed their way back into the game near the end of the second. With 2:30 on the clock before the intermission, Shane Bennett cashed in on a power play opportunity and the RiverKings had life. It was only eight seconds later when Bennett added his second of the night, stealing a puck off the draw and burying the breakaway chance behind Bulls netminder Charlie Millen, getting Mississippi within one goal.

Out of the second intermission, despite the RiverKings controlling most of the play, the Bulls netted their fourth and fifth goals of the night and knocking off Mississippi, 5-2 at Pelham Civic Complex.

The RiverKings have two more games on the road before returning home to Planters Bank Ice at Landers Center, starting with a matchup against the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs on Saturday night. A split weekend on December 22 and 23 sees Mississippi in Peoria on Friday, and back home against Pensacola on Saturday.
