Mantha nets two goals in defeat from the Rail Yard Dawgs

SOUHTAVEN, Miss. – Devin Mantha netted two goals for the Mississippi RiverKings (24-17-2) in a 4-2 loss against the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs (14-21-6) on Pink in the Rink, presented by ServiceMaster by Stratos on Saturday night at the Landers Center.

Early in the first, Ryan Marcuz and Brant Sherwood displayed a series of precision passes to find team captain Devin Mantha for a power play goal to put the RiverKings up 1-0. Roanoke answered with a goal from Mike Moroso, who edged the puck past Peter Di Salvo on a rebound.

At 3:45 into the second period, Roanoke’s Jackson Brewer dished a pass to the slot for forward Daniel Vernace to give the Rail Yard Dawgs a 2-1 lead. Mississippi and Roanoke shared two power play opportunities a piece in the period but failed to capitalize on the extra man advantage.

With a Massimo Lamacchia wrist shot, Roanoke advanced their lead 3-1 at 5:51 into the third period. Zach Tatrn and Mike Moroso were credited with the assists for Roanoke.

The RiverKings would not rest offensively. With just five minutes remaining, Devin Mantha tallied a shorthanded goal on a breakaway pass from Ryan Marcuz to put the game at 3-2. With a late power play opportunity for the RiverKings and a empty net, right wing Phil Bronner found a wide open net to give Roanoke the 4-2 victory in the final seconds of the game.

Peter Di Salvo (13-10-4) took the loss in the rematch diverting 39 of 43 shots. James Kruger (2-8-3) earned the victory by stopping 34 of 36 shots.
